Myrtle and Charles Meet in Denison, Texas

Myrtle met Charles Fillmore in Denison, Texas, where she moved to seek relief from tuberculosis. Myrtle kept busy with activities in the local Methodist church, tutoring, and joining the Denison Literary Club. She also opened a private school where the Texas children called “Miss Page” a Yankee because she was from Ohio. The town was thrilled with her progressive school where children seemed to excel and were encouraged to think for themselves.

Charles was working as a freight agent for the railroad when he spotted Myrtle at a literary club meeting. In the fall of 1878, Myrtle returned to her teaching job in Clinton, Missouri. Charles set out the following year for Colorado, and the two corresponded until 1881. When the winter snow melted, Charles traveled to Missouri to marry Myrtle. The two were married on March 29, 1881, in Clinton, Missouri.
